Baseline IAQ Surveys
As more and more people understand the benefits of good indoor air quality the requests for baseline IAQ surveys have risen. A baseline IAQ survey measures airborne contaminants using direct read instruments and provides the client with information regarding the comfort parameters of temperature and relative humidity as well as information about airborne contaminants such as carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide and airborne particulates (dust). Results from airborne particulate and carbon dioxide measurements provide information about the building’s ventilation and filtration. The results from baseline surveys are compared with applicable federal, state and local regulations and guidelines.

Conducting annual follow-up surveys after the initial baseline survey is an inexpensive way to assess your facility’s air quality and allows you to track it over time to see how changes within the building affect the building’s IAQ.

An example of how a baseline survey can provide benefits to your building is illustrated by a high-rise building in which EHSI/Healthy Buildings conducted a baseline survey a number of years ago. The baseline survey provided carbon monoxide information that showed that vehicle exhaust from the basement parking garage was affecting air quality on the lowest five floors. Subsequent follow-up surveys in the same building have shown that the recommended changes eliminated vehicle exhaust from occupied floors.
