RADIATION

Typical Causes     Where to Look       What to do

Typical causes of radiation problems...

There are two main sources of radiation in homes: radon, which naturally occurs from the ground, and man-made radiation, that is, electro-magnetic fields (EMFs) from electrical appliances and power lines. (Contact the EPA for the location of high radon areas.

  • Radon is a proven carcinogen.  It causes lung- cancer at elevated levels. Radon is a colorless, odorless radioactive gas that comes from rock and soil.  It is everywhere in the outside environment at very low, harmless levels.  It can however, reach dangerously high levels in homes that are built in areas where there is a radon source under the ground, and a pathway to the basement through porous soil, leaks, cracks in the basement floors and walls, and where no radon control methods are built into the home.

  • EMFs and electric fields are thought to be a health risk by many, however most tests to date are inconclusive. Some people with multiple chemical sensitivities (MSCs) can “feel” high EMF’s and we believe it is prudent to listen to the “canaries” and minimize exposure to both radon and EMFs.

Where to look for Radon...

Radon is just one of the several soil gases that sneak into your home through leaks and cracks in the basement concrete. Methane, thorium, moisture, mold and bacteria can also come from the soil into your home. (Call the EPA for  identification of high radon areas.) Other possible sources of radon are:

  • Crawl spaces
  • Pipes in the basement (gaps around pipes)
  • Well water
  • Cracks in concrete basements

Where to look for EMFs

  • High voltage power lines close to your home
  • Electric blankets
  • Electric stoves

What to do about Radon...

  • Seal all cracks
  • Seal gaps around pipes
  • Seal water entry points
  • Test for radon for a minimum of five days in the lowest part of the basement or crawl space

What to do about EMFs...

  • Do not operate electric blankets while you are in bed
  • Have your house tested for EMFs if high voltage power lines are within 100 ft.
