The use of tobacco in a home is a personal choice. However, there are times when a person’s personal choices may affect others. EHSI/Healthy Buildings has successfully worked with clients to resolve issues arising from situations in which tobacco smoke from one residential unit affects the occupants of an adjacent, but separate unit, typically in condominiums or apartments.
EHSI/Healthy Buildings can provide testing and support for a number of different issues that may arise from the unintended transfer of tobacco smoke from one residential unit to another. Often, air transfer between separate units is through small, difficult to identify, “openings” and “cracks” in the shared walls between the units. EHSI/Healthy Buildings uses remote imaging borescopes, visual smoke, and pressurization to identify the “openings” and provide recommendations for sealing them.
EHSI/Healthy Buildings has also developed sampling plans, conducted on-site testing and provided evaluations of laboratory analysis for tobacco residues to support clients in litigation arising from the transfer of tobacco smoke between condominium units.
